The Oklahoma Department of Education issued the following weekly message from the state superintendent:
Thomas Jefferson once wrote that the study of history renders "the people safe, as they are the ultimate guardians of their own liberty. History, by apprising them of the past, will enable them to judge of the future."
Jefferson was saying that if Americans are not taught about their past, then they might take for granted what they have in the present.
