Is there magic in Web services?

In last month's column, we looked at why it is so difficult to integrate different systems, whether they be inside or outside a company. Some of the problems, such as gaining access to data from different systems, can be solved using technology such as open databases. But when it comes to other hurdles - integration with trading partners, in particular - Web services and extensible markup language (XML) are now being held up as the best solution.

The idea behind Web services is to make it possible for any software program, written in any language and running on any operating system, to connect and exchange information with another program. And XML makes Web services possible.
