As the Reserve Officers Association enters its second century of service, leaders at all levels are assessing our status and seeking the right adjustments that will ensure relevance. As I work on this issue, I find myself frequently going back through ROAs history to look for earlier parallels.
Recently a friend in Ohio gave me an edition of The Reserve Officer, ROAs magazine of a past era. It contains the full text of General of the Armies John J. Pershing's speech to the first ROA National Convention held Oct. 3,1922, at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. I have referred to this speech in previous columns, but the more I read it, the more I get from it.
