USMC Plans a Leading Role in Afghanistan.
It was just bad timing. Military strategy collided with political maneuvering.
When Marine Corps commandant Gen James Conway floated the idea of shifting Marines from western Iraq to Afghanistan at an early October meeting of senior-level military officials in Washington, D.C., he hadn't had a chance to talk with secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Gen Conway s plan was leaked publicly by The New York Times and Los Angeles Times. At that point, there were approximately 350 Marines in Afghanistan.
The initial response from Pentagon leaders was cool. Gen Conway's proposal coincided with Secretary Gates' asking the Ukraine and other Eastern European ...
