Since the Civil War the question of why Lincoln did not free the slaves sooner than he did if his sympathy with and understanding of their plight was genuine. Carnahan's detailed explanation lays to rest such criticism. As soon as he heard that the Confederates had fired on Fort Sumter, Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts dashed to the White House and demanded that President Lincoln free all the slaves in the Confederacy.
