Examinations of the liberalizing of aesthetics from the suppressing power of the elite are always interesting. This one is especially interesting and informative because it is a study of how American academics of the last half of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries taught of the supposed tension between democracy and aesthetics. Castronovo approaches the problem with the question, "How does democracy taste?" and seeks his answer in the often forgotten notes that academicians used during the time lecturing to their students.
