At the end of April, the U.S. National Academies convened a one-day symposium to take stock of progress made since the release of the seminal report Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future (2005). I'm sure that you all know the "gathering storm"; it is a much lauded alarm and call to action for bolstering math and science education and for strengthening the United States* research establishment.
