Conceptual Design Reduces Energy in Aluminum Production

Carbothermic reduction of aluminum could lead to energy savings and emissions reductions for the aluminum industry. N.A. Warner, emeritus professor at the U.K.'s University of Birmingham, describes a generic melt circulation process that could make carbothermic; reduction a viable replacement for the energy-intensive electrolysis process for producing aluminum. His work was recently published on-line by the TMS/ ASM International journal Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B.
