Article: 165th airlift wing, Georgia Air National Guard: A tradition of excellence

This is the eighth in our series on the history of Air National Guard units.

The Second World War had ended. From around the world, units of the United States Armed Forces were returning home, some being deactivated. One such unit, the P-47 "Thunderbolt" equipped 351st Fighter Squadron stepped down on October 18, 1945, but was renewed and reborn in the fall of 1946 as the 158th Fighter Squadron, assigned to the State of Georgia as a National Guard unit equipped with P-47D aircraft and stationed at Chatham Field, Georgia (now Savannah Intemational Airport). In August 1948, the 158th became one of the first units in the Air Guard to receive new jet fighters, the F-80C "Shooting Star." ...
