Death of the ground floor in Mumbai

NEW DELHI, India, July 1 -- For years, they have been marooned in their own houses every monsoon. But not anymore. Now, residents of ground floor flats in Mumbai's low-lying areas are using redevelopment to win their struggle against waterlogging and a sharp drop in property rates of their homes.

Many housing societies with ground floor flats have started approaching builders to redevelop properties that have got devalued over the past three years, after the deluge of July 26, 2005. And they want buildings on stilts - with no flats on the ground floor.

Many housing societies in Andheri, Juhu, Wadala and Borivli have gone to builders and are in different stages of negotiation ...
