I love a good picnic, but boy do I hate a soggy sandwich.

Luckily, I haven't made one of those since the day years ago when I saw Julia Child on TV explaining the wisdom of the buttered sandwich: The fat in the butter forms a protective layer between the bread slices and whatever moist fixings are sandwiched inside. Mayonnaise does the same trick.

This is good to know when you're building vegetarian sandwiches, since veggies tend to be loaded with moisture. And butter and mayo aren't the only options.
