Preaching Finance to Religious Groups

Accounting for nearly 10% of the U.S. Gross National Product, the non-profit sector isn't only about projects that make donors feel good.

It's also about big business.

The annual revenue of the 1,300 non-profits represented by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability amounts to more than $18 billion, according to council President Dan Busby. Members include such faith-based giants as World Vision, Focus on the Family and the Billy Graham Evangelical Association. The council, based in Winchester, won't accept members whose annual revenue is less than $100,000, Busby said.

"Our typical member is one with $3 million annual revenue," he said.
