Economy Continues on Steady Pace, But Retail Sales Are Down

Maintaining a steady 4.5% unemployment rate, the Washington County economy remained stable during 2007 and into the first four months of 2008.

As with the rest of the Quadstate region, the housing market softened, particularly in the new home market, as the number of building permits issued in the county and Hagerstown dropped considerably during the last 15 months. The median and average prices of homes sold also were down last year, but not as much as in jurisdictions to the south.

Retail sales in the county were up by 1.6% in 2007, but have declined by 2.6% in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same quarter last year. Because groceries are not taxed, they are not included in sales ...
