There is a generation gap in today's workplace that stems from different cultural experiences and attitudes, which impacts many aspects of an organization. Rather than expecting all generations to conform to the wishes of another, organizations should develop an understanding of how members of each generation think and develop policies accordingly, keeping in mind what is best for the organization's long-term future.

Defining the Generations

Today's workplace consists of four generations as defined by demographers:

* Veterans (born 1920-1942)

* Baby Boomers (born 1943-1960)

* Generation X (born 1961-1979)

* Generation Y or Millennial (born 1980-2000)
