Reluctant to wield its greatest power, La Crosse Common Council members Thursday removed themselves from a dispute between a local developer and sign company over a massive Copeland Avenue billboard.
"If they can work it out they should do it themselves," council member Doug Farmer said.
NSD Hotel Associates said the Collins Outdoor Advertising sign threatens their plans for a $4.8 million extended stay hotel just north of downtown La Crosse.
"This issue comes down to either saving a billboard or developing the site," said developer Paul Borsheim, who with his Three Rivers Plaza colleagues are pursuing the 92-room Candlewood Suites.
