Fiona Baile reviews the latest dance performances
Northern Ballet Theatre who are known for dance dramas brought Hamlet to Sadler's Wells on 22 April: not Hamlet as we know it, this one having been set in the period of the Nazi occupation of France. That in itself wouldn't stop it being the Shakespearean play with which we are all familiar; what prevents this from being anything recognisable is the lack of story telling and the episodic nature of the work, which is without cohesion. The programme explains that Hamlet is a French Soldier whose father has been killed and whose mother Gertrude, marries Claudius, Head of Police. Polonius, father of Ophelia, works in the French/German Gestapo. ...
