Introduction

In resource-rich countries, the prognosis of pediatric HIV infection has undergone a dramatic transformation since the availability of antiretroviral drugs (ARV), particularly with the advent of highly active antiretroviral treatment regimens (HAART) in the later part of the 1990s. As a direct consequence of the availability and use of HAART, marked declines in mortality and morbidity have been reported in recent years.
