This is a first book by a young, bright, and energetic author based at the United Kingdom's premier Institute for Irish Studies in Liverpool, where she works with one of the best historians of Catholicism in Britain, Marianne Elliott. These are propitious signs. Her topic, too, will ensure a keen and willing readership, for Northern Ireland's peace process has potential to surpass that of South Africa's as the model for peaceful transitions elsewhere, in that the latter's was essentially an elite compromise at the top ...
