With Danger Mouse handling production duties, one might expect Beck's latest to be a sample-heavy, good-time affair along the lines of Odelay, Midnight Vultures or Guero.

It isn't.

The Gnarls Barkley prankster is the star of the show, though, filling Modern Guilt with skittery beats, elastic bass lines, stuttering shuffles and otherworldly psychedelic synth flourishes, which stick out in stark contrast to the woe-is-everything tone of Beck's lyrics. It's like a party where the soundtrack rocks, but last year's tax returns dominate the conversation.
