For years, the Israeli commando has starred on the nightly news as the bad boy of the Middle East. Now, Adam Sandier has gone and made such a commando the protagonist of the first major comedy film about the Israeli-Arab conflict.
Cool, right? Maybe.
When "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" opened recently in Israel, Sandler's spoof about a burnt-out soldier who fakes his own death to pursue his dream as a New York hairstylist/gigolo created a buzz in newspapers and across the Hebrew blogosphere. Israeli actors in the film celebrated with a party at a Tel Aviv movie house.
But what do other Israelis think of the portrayal of the commando as a militaristic, hummus-scarfing sex machine? Judging ...
