Funding the FDA, Finally

As we went to press, a Senate appropriations committee backed a bill to increase funding to the US Food and Drug Administration by $275 million for fiscal year 2009, including $100 million more for drugs. This matches the amount that FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach specified in his May 5 letter to Senator Arlen Spector, in response to the Senator's request for a budget number.

It is refreshing to see this new willingness to fund the FDA; many of us have been calling for this for some time (see my March editorial).
