Our Biggest Challenge

Some might say that the biggest challenge facing language educators is convincing the general public that language learning is important. However, I would suggest that an even higher priority is to define what it means to "learn" a second language.

Consider the following scenario: We have finally succeeded in persuading John and Jane Public that the ability to communicate with the rest of the world in their languages is essential for the economic and strategic well-being of all nations. They agree but then add, "Okay, but I don't have enough time to sign up for classes, so I'll learn the language while I am flying to my next business meeting."
