Sea sawdust makes tropical oceans richer

Tropical oceans are generally considered to be tropical "deserts"-relatively unproductive regions with a scarcity of nutrients when compared to coastal waters.

In an article that appeared in the May 23rd issue of the journal Science, lead author Dr. Douglas Capone, the Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies' (CEES) Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, and his colleagues have found that though a self-fertilizing process performed by widely distributed marine organisms, these vast areas are more biologically productive than previously believed, according to a spokesman.
