Alabama's long-established company adds international flair.

Few small southern ballet companies get to push their boundaries with Middle Eastern melodies or Latin rhythms. But thanks to new artistic director Elie Lazar, the dancers at the Montgomery Ballet in Alabama have experimented with both.

"Now we're getting to dance pieces that motivate," says 23-year-old Alex Giuffre, who is in her third season with thp company. Her favorite recent role has been in Lazar's Surrender 2 Love, a pas de deux set to Latin music. "There are a lot of lifts and pirouettes," she says. "And it's very fluid; you move from one position to the next with no preparation."
