A look ahead at the 2008-09 season

The offerings of the 2008-09 ballet season are as varied and distinctive as the tiles in a jewel-toned mosaic, with diverse opportunities for both dancers and audiences. As the economy in the U.S. tightens, some companies are feeling the pinch, shortening performance runs and shifting less reliably popular mixed repertory evenings to smaller venues. Yet being conservative hasn't meant becoming overly cautious: Companies big and small continue to show a commitment to stretching dancers, giving opportunities to the next generation of choreographers and reexamining recent gems of modern and contemporary ballet.
