It is near impossible to discuss the theme of slavery in West Africa without acknowledging the contributions of Paul Lovejoy. This latest work by Lovejoy is a collection of some of his major essays on slavery in the Sokoto Caliphate, the largest state in nineteenth-century sub-Saharan Africa.
