Washington, July 26 -- People consume cranberry juice believing it would keep urinary tract infections at bay, though the exact mechanism has not been well understood.

A new study reveals that the juice changes the thermodynamic properties of bacteria in the urinary tract, creating an energy barrier that prevents them from getting close enough to latch onto cells and initiate an infection.

Terri Camesano, associate professor of chemical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and a team of graduate students conducted the study.
