For African Americans, the Fourth of July is a holiday that brings mixed emotions.
Just as Columbus Day reminds Native Americans of the oppression of their ancestors, Independence Day is a reminder that people of African descent were still enslaved when Thomas Jefferson (himself a slaveholder) drafted the Declaration of Independence.
Many in the Black community, however, choose to overlook the political connotations of the Fourth of July and celebrate the benefits of the holiday - a day off from work and an opportunity to get together with family and friends.
African Americans are just as likely to attend fireworks celebrations as their Caucasian neighbors and coworkers. Red, White & ...
