* There are now over 27,000 nuclear weapons in the world, deployed on land, sea, and un the air. They pose a constant threat of nuclear war and radioactive contamination. Nine countries have nuclear weapons: the United States, Russia, France, China, Britain, Israel, India, Pakistan, and North Korea. It is estimated that as many as 40 other countries have the knowledge to build or acquire such weapons.
* The U.S. spends $40 billion a year on building and deploying nuclear weapons, and now has 5,700 of them in its arsenal. This is roughly the same cost as universal access to basic health care, education, adequate food, clean water, and safe sewers for the world's population. Since the end of ...
