Which value is more important: peace or truth? The Midrash describes a debate in Heaven prior to Adam's creation. Peace said yes, create. Truth said no, man - subject to whims, inconsistencies, compulsions and compromises - might learn to bring peace but could never survive truth. God flings Truth to the ground and proceeds to create man.
Certainly, the authority and majesty of r truth needs no defenders. But implicit in this Midrash is the view that in our world, more crucial than the pursuit of truth is the ? achievement of peace.
