There are times when history tries to forget the gruff first commander of the US Seventh Fleet.

Thomas Cassin Kinkaid had the physical appearance of something dug up off the sea floor with his thick uncontrollable eyebrows, bulldog face, brown hair shot with gray, 6-ft-tall body held in check by stern discipline, and ruddy complexion.

He was a black-eyed, rosy-cheeked Irishman who liked to play rough. 'Tve had to fight my temper all my life," he once said. The end result was he came off as soft spoken and tried to play well with other admirals.
