DoD Recognizes Stigma and Changes Security Clearance Question on Mental Health

The Department of Defense recently changed a mental health question on their long standing security clearance form because officials believe that it may be preventing some from seeking the care they need. The change was made to Standard Form 86, Questionnaire for National security Positions. The form asks applicants to indicate mental health care in the last seven years. It does not ask for treatment details if the care only involved marital, family or grief counseling not related to violence by the applicant, unless the treatment was court ordered.
