Jimmy Carter has just tried negotiating on his own with Hamas, a terrorist organization, and will soon be headed home, but let's don't stop with his efforts.

It would be an equally meritorious idea, wouldn't it, if Bill Clinton sought out Osama bin Laden for some private give and take about al Qaeda policies? And meanwhile, George H.W. Bush could hop around the Middle East talking to radical clerics, not on behalf of his son's administration, but with his own, personal agenda as a very concerned guy.

That would use up all the living ex-presidents, but then we have a bunch of ex-senators to fall back on, and they could head for trouble spots in Asia, Africa and Latin America, each ...
