The lengthy strike by the Writers Guild of America caused movie lovers to worry that Oscar might be missing in action this week.

Sure, the golden statues would have been bestowed, but there wouldn't have been any stars, any controversies, any magic moments.

Gilbert Cates, producer of the 80th annual Academy Awards, which will air tonight at 8:30 on ABC, had planned to do a show featuring film clips if the strike continued.

Thank goodness the differences between writers and producers have been settled and the healing can begin with the Oscar broadcast.
