Provocative Self-Portraits

SAN FRANCISCO * The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art features an exhibition of self-portraits by renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo this month. The presentation includes about 50 paintings, ranging from the beginning of Kahlo's career in 1926 to her death in 1954. Kahlo's folkoric style, influenced by Mexican popular art, and her fantastical imagery eventually earned her recognition among the Surrealists. But her originality also established her as a leading figure in the modern art world. A selection from Kahlo's own collection of photographs also accompanies the exhibit.
