Let's sing them an anthem, hum them a hymn.

Glory be each numbered door, every last white

towel, even the frayed. Every day is laundry day,

you always come up clean. Hotel bibles know

their place (drawers), they pass no judgement, nor

does the pool, an aqua bowl brimming with faith.

Somewhere, someone stuffs a shower

cap into a small box. A sacred act. Let's hear it

for those paper hats the tumblers wear, for country

stations blurring by as you twirl clock-radio dials

until your own voice washes across the shag carpet.

You're free of history, here. Or, if you must have one

it's jolly - a trembling chambermaid seeking your

autograph, her breath small gallops inside her uniform.
