In the wake of the recent killings at Virginia Tech, this article expresses a fear that laymen and professionals alike may overly react toward someone who seems somehow odd or different by regarding that individual as dangerous and a candidate for hospitalization . Even before this tragic incident, individuals were unwillingly hospitalized, because in the State of New Jersey an "emergency intervention unit" deemed them unstable, despite having no history of violence or self-destructive behavior and no wishes to hurt anyone, and subsequently learning that they posed no danger to others or to themselves.
