INTRODUCTION

This sermon on the Emmaus story was delivered on Easter Monday in 1939. Von Rad usually preached in the Confessing Congregation in Jena where he attended worship and belonged to the brotherhood. The Confessing Congregation formed in 1934 when the pastorates in Jena were occupied by German Christians. Nonetheless, professors on the theology faculty at Jena had to preach on the second Sundays of Easter, Christmas, and Pentecost in the city church, so von Rad also occasionally conducted worship services there. Thus, one can assume that the sermon at hand was delivered there, although the manuscript mentions no location.
