Between Text & Sermon: Ephesians 1:15-23

THE PETITIONARY PRAYER FOR WISDOM and enlightenment at the end of Eph 1 appears at first glance to be an elevating excursus sandwiched between a glorious witness to God's saving program (1:2-14) and an exposition of the Savior's gift of grace (2:1-10). While those elements are present in this passage, these categories do not capture the essential point of either the prayer in particular or the two-chapter passage in general.
