Unusually high losses to nest collapse in Black-headed Buntings Emberiza melanocephala nesting on a preferred plant species

Collapse of the nest structure from the supporting substrate is regarded as a minor source of breeding failure in birds and is often caused by inclement weather (Ricklefs 1969). It is reported as occurring rarely in some large raptors that build heavy nests of sticks, which sometimes collapse under their own weight (Newton 1979). Nest collapse, however, occurs regularly and is a major cause of nest mortality in two species of kite (Glinski & Ohmart 1983, Snyder et al. 1989).
