Story behind the gift:
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States. So when the Cardiovascular Research and Education Foundation of Indiana was pondering what outreach program it would tackle next, its leaders opted to address sudden cardiac arrest head on.
The best way, they thought, would be to make sure all of Indiana's more than 400 high schools have access to automated external defibrillators, the lunch-box-size machines that shock a heart back into rhythm.
This February, the foundation kicked off its "Reviving Hearts Program," setting the goal to raise $1 million to make AEDs available to every school in Indiana. So far, it's raised $123,000.
