TRAFFIC SIGNAL ENHANCEMENTS AID IN SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY OBJECTIVES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Recent developments in information technology (IT) have affected many aspects of our lives, including traffic signals. The traffic signals industry in the United Kingdom (UK) has used IT not only to improve the operation of signals and the performance of the highway network but also to enhance the safety aspects of traffic signals. Several areas of signal safety have benefited significantly, including fault monitoring systems (FMS), red-lamp monitoring, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), reversion to all red, all-red extensions, signal coordination and the operation of signal-controlled pedestrian crossings, as described below.
