Homeowners and businesses with underground septic systems will face greater scrutiny under new state environmental rules mandating that the systems be periodically pumped out and inspected.
The mandate that septic systems undergo periodic maintenance was among a sweeping list of rules approved last month by the state Department of Environmental Protection. The rules are intended to protect and improve water quality in the state.
