In 2000, my husband, Rick, and I adopted Kelsey, a beautiful baby girl from Russia. Not long after bringing her home, Kelsey was diagnosed with a severe to profound hearing loss at 16 months old.
Being an academic, I researched every communication option available to Kelsey, and Rick and I eventually decided to pursue a spoken language approach to her language and communication skills development.
Following this decision, my husband and I encountered several objections to the spoken language approach. In responding to these criticisms, we are not operating with the perspective of an educator of the deaf or an expert on hearing loss, but with the perspective of parents who made what some ...
