His adopted surname said it all-Jimmy Slyde was a smooth and elegant performer who appeared to glide across the stage. One of the last great tap dancers of the big-band era, Slyde passed away May 16 at his home in Hanson, MA. He was 80.

Born James Titus Godbolt in Atlanta in 1927, Slyde started tap dancing as a child when his family moved to Massachusetts. He'd been studying violin at the New England Conservatory but soon discovered Stanley Brown's tap studio across the street. There he watched tap greats such as Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and John W.
