Economic troubles strain small South Florida churches

SOUTH FLORIDA

EVEN THE most fervent prayers haven't been enough to save some of South Florida's small immigrant churches.

So far, about six in Broward have defaulted on mortgages and lost their places of worship, said Pastor Michael Petty, executive director of the Gulf Stream Baptist Association, an alliance of more than 170 Southern Baptist churches in Broward County.

"Some of them can't pay their rent... There are others that are in danger of losing [their buildings]," Petty said.
