Ska - the sound of a youthful Jamaica

IT IS Friday evening, July 18, and the early sounds of Jamaica are blasting from the basement of an Episcopal church off White Plains Road in the Bronx. It is a humid evening on a day when temperatures had tipped over the 90 degree mark and showed no signs of improving into the late night. Inside the basement, the session was just warming up. As the rhythms dropped, the temperature got hotter!

The patrons - church members from the Caribbean, mainly Jamaica - were in a celebratory mood. They were re-living the past through the music of the '60s and honouring the legacy of one of the pioneers of Jamaican music, the legendary guitarist, Jerome 'Jah Jerry' Haynes.
