This is the third large-scale work on Abraham Lincoln by the genial and meticulous William C. Harris, following hard on the heels of With Charity for All: Lincoln and the Restoration of the Union (Lexington, Ky., 1997) and Lincoln's Last Months (Cambridge, Mass., 2004). Having dealt in the first two with Lincoln as president, Harris attempts in his newest opus to trace the paths by which Lincoln climbed to the presidency.
