Although many caricatures of southerners depict them as exhibiting excessively correct manners, only a few historians have studied how standards for proper behavior have actually affected southern history. As the organizer of the Porter Fortune Jr. History Symposium at the University of Mississippi, Ted Ownby challenged a group of scholars to begin to remedy this lack and encouraged them to think of "manners not as customs or mores, but as etiquette, considered broadly" (p. vii).
