Technology helps preserve legacies on the Oregon Coast Highway

During the 1920s and 1930s, Oregon's legendary bridge engineer Conde B. McCullough oversaw the design and construction of numerous bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway. McCullough's bridges were masterpieces of art deco architecture carefully matched to stunning natural settings, and most included his trademark reinforced concrete arch spans.1-3 In 1936, a project funded by the Public Works Administration completed the last of five major bridges on the route, allowing the remaining ferries between the Columbia River and the California border to be taken out of service.
